VANITAS

2018

The «wall paintings» conceived in 1979 and made from 1989 are generated from the golden ratio. They are always in tension with the architecture and its environment. The typography is extended to the limit of readability .. The selected texts are based on the place and its history, appropriating phrases from literature, opera and a common culture. I chose Latin, the dead language, as an allegorical representation of generalized blindness. The place of Domaine de Pommery lends itself admirably to an abyss of the history of art and thought. The tension existing between the outside and its underground life pushed me to operate on the outside in agreement with the works of the artists in which the fundamental problems related to the human and artistic experience are approached. It was necessary to take this research out of the underground and to expose it in broad daylight, declaring the vanity of the consumerist race. it seemed imperative to me to evoke the passage of time and the emptiness of passions. This almost illegible message, in the tradition of vanities, encourages us to meditate on the ephemeral nature of the pleasures of consumption and to turn to a symbolic perspective to discover an intellectually satisfying existential unity.
